Members of the high school’s Key Club are collecting prom dresses for a prom fair and fashion show on March 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the high school on Route 309. Proceeds from the public event will go to the American Cancer Society. Olga Papa, key club adviser, said the event is a great way for girls to discover great dresses without spending a lot of money. The group expects the dresses to cost around $20 to $30, depending on the condition and the style. “Proms are costing so much money, and with the way the economy is … between the dresses, the tuxedo rentals, the limousine rentals, the make-up, the hair, you’re talking about hundreds of dollars that people just don’t have,” she said. Junior Lindsay Metzger, 17, president of the Key Club, said the dresses will be on display during the fair, with students modeling some of the dresses to generate more interest in purchasing them. The group has already collected several dresses, some of which are “beautiful,” said junior Ashley Vargas, 16, co-chair for the fair. The club is optimistic that even the most unusual dresses will find a home after the fair. “I always just remember, what you think is tacky someone else thinks is fabulous,” Ashley Legg, 16, a junior and club member, said. The club chose the American Cancer Society because of the need to educate teens about the elevated risk of skin cancer from using tanning beds. Incorporating a fashion show into the fair allows the club to raise awareness about issues like excessive tanning and the dangers of drinking, while also having some fun, organizers said. Junior Ryan Windt, 17, co-chair for the prom fair, said the event is a great chance for women to recycle dresses worn once that are now languishing in their closets. “Chances are they’ll never wear them again anyway,” he said. One of the Key Club’s primary goals is to better their community through volunteer work, whether through clothing drives, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army’s kettle drive during the holidays, or collecting food for the homeless. “Whatever comes our way, we’ll try to do,” Papa said.
